Introduction
The CCNP Video Mentor helps CCNP candidates prepare to pass the series of CCNP exams by
supplying 16 instructional videos. Each video presents a unique lab scenario, with both visual ref-
erences and audio explanations of what you should expect to happen in a particular lab. The videos
also show how details of the command-line interface (CLI) commands are used to implement the
features described in each lab video, along with running commentary. The result is a set of videos
that explain some of the most important CCNP topics from the BSCI, BCMSN, ISCW, and ONT
courses, with thorough explanations from a trusted mentor.
The CCNP Video Mentor product was created out of a need for something more than just the static
written word of a typical book. Cisco Press already offers many CCNP book products that cover
the wide breadth of topics in the series of CCNP exams. However, many people learn better in a
classroom setting, with an instructor explaining the concepts while showing details projected on
the wall. Many buyers of the Cisco Press book products asked for a product closer to what you
might get in a class—and the CCNP Video Mentor is the answer to that request.
Goals and Methods
The CCNP Video Mentor has a very specific set of goals. First, this product seeks to help its viewers
more completely and thoroughly understand several of the most important BSCI, BCMSN, ISCW,
and ONT exam topics. Although you might have already read about these topics in other books, or
heard about them in classes, the CCNP Video Mentor helps you master these particular topics.
Using this product in addition to reading a book or attending a course should help solidify your
knowledge, help you see how to apply that knowledge, and help prepare you for the application of
knowledge in the exams.
Note that the CCNP Video Mentor does not attempt to cover all possible topics on the BSCI,
BCMSN, ISCW, and ONT exams. Rather, this product gives you an extra resource for mastering
some of the high-profile topics in the CCNP track.
Each of the 16 videos takes the same basic approach:
1. The video begins with a description of its goals.
2. The lab scenario steps are listed, giving an outline of what you should expect to see and hear
during the video.
3. The network topology used in the video is detailed.
4. Then, for each scenario step:
a. The video shows what you should expect from each part of the lab exercise.
b. The video shows the CLI (or GUI) details of how to configure and verify that the routers
and switches are working properly.
CCNP Video Mentor Contents
The CCNP Video Mentor product package contains two components: a DVD and a booklet. The DVD
contains the 16 lab videos, plus five introductory videos from the mentor. The DVD has been opti-
mized for viewing on a computer, with a 1024 × 768 minimum pixel grid. When the DVD starts, it
displays a menu, from which you can select a video from a specific CCNP course or view a PDF
copy of the booklet.
The booklet is a reference document. It is not meant to be used as a standalone tool but as a reference
when watching the videos. The booklet has a section corresponding to each of the 16 CCNP Video
Mentor labs, with each section containing a copy of the figures and other material shown in the video.
Each section includes the following:
■ The list of objectives for the video
■ The list of scenario steps
■ Copies of all figures shown in the video
■ Copies of any reference lists shown in the video
■ The beginning configuration on each device
■ Configurations added to each device during the video

CCNP Video Mentor is a is a DVD-ROM software product. The enclosed DVD contain a series of succinct instructional videos that demonstrate how to accomplish various CCNP-level configuration tasks on Cisco routers and switches. The 16 videos contained in this product total over 5 hours of instruction. In each individual 10-15 minute video, senior instructor Kevin Wallace walks you through basic configuration tasks. The videos consist of audio instruction, animations, and router and switch CLI video screen-casts. Each video lab presents suggested reading lists, detailed objectives, lab diagrams, command tables, and video captures. Audio instruction throughout offers tips and shortcuts that truly make learning easy. Animated network diagrams show you lab setup, device addressing, and how traffic flows through the network. Video screen-casts of the router and switch CLI demonstrate command entry, configuration techniques, and device response. For several years now, Cisco has included simulation-based assessment into its CCNP exams. These simulation questions require you to perform basic configuration tasks, adding another level of complexity to the certification process. CCNP Video Mentor helps you be better prepared for this aspect of the exam.
